Job Description
The College Board, the national educational organization, is searching for an Executive Director who will assume a leadership role in delivering data-driven, actionable and insightful strategic recommendations to support our College Readiness division’s top priorities in education. College Readiness initiatives promote curricula, assessment tools and school district resources that help K-12 students prepare for the rigors of higher education.
Position Summary
The Executive Director, Strategy Formulation & Analytics manages a unit that is responsible for building and supporting division-wide and product strategy definition projects; managing strategy integration across programs; analyzing strategic issues and opportunities; and analyzing and optimizing business and operating processes.
The Executive Director, Strategy Formulation and Analytics will lead product strategy and market analytics efforts aimed at identifying and addressing complex product opportunities and challenges, and must be able to deconstruct complex product planning challenges into addressable sets of analyses.
Key Responsibilities
* Building and managing an effective strategy formulation team to provide the College Readiness division with best practice strategy services to include rapid opportunity assessments, scenario planning, executive facilitation and strategy projects, market intelligence and competitive analysis.
* Lead strategy initiatives to identify and design an appropriate analytical framework that tests division-wide strategic hypotheses while delivering data driven insights that support actionable prioritization and strategic direction
* Provide fact-based market intelligence, competitor trends synthesis, effective distillation and articulation of provocative insights and recommendations for overall division and program strategies.
* Evaluate new product development ideas: mission and economic impact, market assessment, competitive positioning, College Board capability to succeed
* Lead the design and planning of strategy projects to address complex strategic issues at both the division and product unit levels
* Develop and perform systematic, ongoing market research and business analytics strategy and oversee its successful implementation
* Pursue a rigorous fact-based understanding of our multiple market audiences and their behaviors to inform better go-to-market decisions based on market segmentation.
* Transform raw data and information into usable strategic knowledge using a high-level of analytical acumen, critical thinking, and oral and written communication skills.
* Lead executive-level problem-solving and facilitation sessions to frame issues and drive decision making and action-planning, Prepare for facilitation by defining the right pre-work and facilitation tools to make the discussions productive and successful.
* Partner with senior program leaders and managers in supporting, facilitating and developing business and product strategies and facilitate resolution of strategic issues and policy questions.
* Provide leadership, project management and execution support in order to structure, drive and lead a range of high-impact, cross-functional initiatives that drive division-wide growth. Initiatives could span a wide variety of topics including supporting the development of an overall division strategy as well as leading specific initiatives.
* Lead the strategic analysis in support of the development and delivery of break-through, innovative, Corporate-wide competitive and growth strategies for existing and new business opportunities, including strategic alliance.
* Supervising activities of staff assigned to project tasks through the use of best practices and internal division guidelines; mentoring, coaching, and providing feedback to strategy project teams.
* Serving as a key evaluator of, and coach for, loaned staff who take on interim assignments in support of strategic initiatives, playing a key part in leadership identification and development process at the College Board. QUALIFICATIONS Education/ Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree required in an analytic field, MBA highly preferred, plus a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional level corporate strategy, business strategy management, or strategy consulting experience. There is a strong preference for experience defining business strategy in the K-12 education industry.
K-12 education industry experiences that could include leading major strategy projects for the education practice of a respected management consulting firm or previous managerial positions in education publishing, education software or analytics, teacher professional development or educational testing are relevant and highly valued. Staff management experience is required. Related Skills & Other Requirements:
* Experienced senior peer advisor in building trusted relationships with peers, senior executive leadership, and business division partners
* Demonstrated experience in successfully leading complex strategy and transformation efforts
* Solid understanding of how to integrate business unit strategy with corporate strategy
* Demonstrated ability to grasp a large, complex business and use this understanding to set overall corporate or business strategy and drive business insights and positive business changes
* Master problem-solver with superior and broad business analysis abilities including market analytics, operations planning or financial modeling with a strong desire to address complex challenges.
* Proficient project management of strategy projects
* Deep working knowledge in the use of effective metrics and scorecard to drive business results
* Outstanding relationship building, consensus building and executive facilitation skills
